Open Question: can i pick hazelnuts from the tree and let them ripen inside?

I have a tree on my property in the Seattle, WA area. I'm concerned that the squirrels will get to the nuts before they have a chance to ripen on the tree. Can I pick some now, in mid-August, and set them inside on a window sill to ripen, or will that ruin them. Thanks for your help as really have no idea.
